Dr. John H. Marks was educated at Yale University and Jefferson Medical College. He performed his general surgical and colorectal specialty training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. In addition he was an International Fellow at the University of Nice in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery. Dr. Marks is a diplomate of the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery and the American Board of Surgery.

Dr. Marks has a strong clinical research interest in the treatment of colon and rectal cancer, with a particular emphasis on techniques for avoiding a permanent colostomy, and he has lectured extensively on these topics both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Marks is an expert in and an advocate of minimally invasive surgical techniques for the treatment of colon and rectal cancer. He served on the faculty of Tyco/Surgicals' laparoscopic training center in Philadelphia where he was the Director of the Section for Laparoscopic Colon and Rectal Surgery. Currently he is a principal investigator and the only colorectal surgeon in the tri-state area participating in the high priority National Cancer Institute-sponsored trial comparing laparoscopic colon resection to to open colectomy for the treatment of colon cancer. He also performs Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (T.E.M.), a technique that allows a transanal approach to lesions that otherwise would require a major abdominal or transsacral approach for resection. Dr. Marks runs one of two training centers in the United States in this technique, to train other surgeons from North American to perform T.E.M.

His research on the detection of cancer cells in the peripheral blood of patients with colon and rectal cancer was recently recognized by an award from the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. He has received an educational grant from Ethicon Endo-Surgery to create a video on laparoscopic colon surgery is currently is collaborating to produce an instructional CD ROM on these techniques..

Additionally, Dr. Marks serves on the American Society of Colon Rectal Surgery's New Technologies Committee as well as the Standards of Care and Legislative Committees of Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons . He also serves on the Strategic Advisory Board for The Colon Cancer Alliance, a group dedicated to educating and assisting the public in all matters pertaining to colorectal cancer.

Dr. Marks offers the full spectrum of care from proctology, sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy to pelvic floor dysfunction, diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease and rectal cancer management.
