How We Selected the Top Cancer Doctors

The physicians on our list were nominated by 280 department chairs and section chiefs in surgical, medical and radiation oncology at major medical centers across the country. We asked, "In your opinion, which doctors provide the most expert treatment and are the leading clinicians for lung, breast, and colon cancer in women?" To eliminate bias, the physicians were not allowed to recommend any specialists from their own institutions.

From the 1,200 doctors named, we culled the 318 cited most often. The doctors in each category are listed in alphabetical order by state and city, with their clinic or hospital affiliation. Doctors endorsed in two subspecialties are listed twice.
