Dr. Gerald J. Marks

Dr. Gerald J. Marks is an internationally recognized colorectal surgeon who is known for his pioneering contributions and original techniques in anal sphincter preservation surgery, management of radiation injuries to the intestines, and maintenance of normal function in rectal cancer management and ulcerative colitis. In 1976 he initiated a rectal cancer management program that still boasts one of the largest series of patients with preoperative irradiation and sphincter preservation surgery and serves as the basis for the International Network of Comprehensive Rectal Cancer Centers, a consortium of thirty-five universities and medical centers worldwide directed by Dr. Marks. He is considered one of the fathers of preoperative radiation treatment for rectal cancer, which is now considered a standard worldwide.

Dr. Marks pioneered the development, use, and teaching of flexible colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy and was founding president of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, which has honored him with an annual lectureship in his name. He is the founding and past president of the International Federation of Societies of Endoscopic Surgeons. He holds honorary memberships in many major national and international societies and has received medals of recognition as a visiting professor from a number of international universities. With more than 100 peer-reviewed articles to his name, Dr. Marks is the first colorectal surgeon to have a professorial chair in colorectal surgery established in his name. The chair is located at Thomas Jefferson University.

Consistently identified among the best doctors and cancer specialists in the United States, Dr. Marks is listed in Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in the World. Dr. Marks is also a watercolor painter who has exhibited nationally and internationally. Currently, Dr. Marks operates at Lankenau, Bryn Mawr, Paoli and Hahnemann Hospitals.
